AB's Useful Box - iPhone info

Just a couple of iPhone tips.

Screen Dimensions

The screen dimensions of the iPhone are 320 x 480 pixels.

Home Screen iCon

You have got a neat web page for the iPhone, but how to create a "home screen" icon?

First of all need to create the icon. It needs to be a 57 x 57 pixels and saved as a PNG type graphic.

The iPhone itself will do the corner rounding.

Next is to create the appropriate link in the header section of your web page. Need to insert the following "apple-touch-icon" information into the <head> section.

<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="iphoneicon.png"/>

The above assumes the "apple-touch-icon" PNG graphic file "iphoneicon.png" is located in the same directory as your web page.

Print Screen on an iPhone

This one I have found useful on many occasions, being able to capture a print screen of the iPhone.

To capture a print screen on the iPhone press and hold down the [home] home button, the press the [lock] button.

The screen may flick for a second and make the camera click sound.

If it has worked, it will have saved a new PNG type graphic file to the Photos, Camera Roll. It can be view and emailed from there.

DIY Ringtones

It is actually not so difficult to create your own ringtones for the iPhone.

If you have a Mac, which comes with the Garage Band application, your laughing.

Open "Garage Band" and select "Create new Podcast Episode"

It is possible to import almost any music file into Garage Band.

Import editing task in Garage Band is to reduce the lenght of your sound file down to less than 40 seconds.

To create the audio file select Share, and Export. In the Export dialogue ensure ACC encoding is selected.

Note where it is saving the file and the filename.

Now locate the newly saved file, which should have the extension of ".m4a", the file extension needs to be changed to ".m4r"

After the file extension has been changed, it should now be possible to open iTunes, select Ring Tones, the Add File, select the new file.

The new file should now appear in the iTunes 'Ring Tones' select. Ensure the length is less than 40 seconds, other wise it will not transfer accross to the iPhone.

A couple of things about the sound file that we must end up with:
- it must be ACC encoded.
- it must be no more than 40 seconds long
- it must have the file extension .m4r

Downloading or Transferring Photos from the iPhone

It is very surprising how many articles there are on the internet for how to transfer Photos, Images or Print Screens from the iPhone's Camera Roll to a PC or Mac, that was until I need to do so myself. Not matter how many times I followed what I appeared to be straight forward instructions, I could not get the iPhone to appear like a plug in USB or Camera. Well, that was until I worked out what the issue was.

Because mine is a work provided phone, I always have the photo/keypad locked.

What I discovered was, that if I connected the iPhone via the USB cable while it was locked, it could not be recognized by the computer.

So before connected an iPhone to your computer, ensure it is not in a locked mode, login, have the normal home screen displayed, then the computer is likely to recognize it like any other USB or Camera. With a PC, it should then be possible to use Windows Explorer to transfer the Photos, Images or Print Screen PNG files.

iPhone Teatherling

Site that I have found helpful for iPhone Teathering, which allows your iPhone to provide internet connection to a Laptop via USB or Bluetooth.
